Chinese Pokémon Cards: The Complete Guide for European Collectors

Most European collectors don't know that the Pokémon TCG exists in Chinese — and that some of the most visually striking and collectible Pokémon cards ever printed are exclusive to the Chinese market. Simplified Chinese Pokémon cards have been produced since 2020 and feature unique sets, exclusive Gift Boxes, and the legendary Gem Pack series — a format that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.

At Celestrion, we import Chinese Pokémon cards directly from official sources and ship them to Switzerland and across Europe. This guide explains everything you need to know about the Simplified Chinese Pokémon TCG, what makes Gem Packs special, and which products we currently have in stock.

What Is the Simplified Chinese Pokémon TCG?

The Pokémon TCG has been officially licensed and produced in Simplified Chinese since 2020, published by Tencent/iQue for the mainland China market. Simplified Chinese cards are 100% official Pokémon products — printed by The Pokémon Company's licensed partner — and are not to be confused with counterfeit cards.

Key differences from the English or Japanese version:

  • Language: card text is in Simplified Chinese characters (simplified script used in mainland China, Singapore, and overseas Chinese communities)

  • Exclusive sets: China has its own set structure — some sets mirror English/Japanese releases, others are China-exclusive with unique packaging and card art

  • Exclusive products: Gift Boxes, Special Collections, and the Gem Pack format do not exist in Western markets

  • Card numbering: Chinese sets use their own set codes (e.g. CS0C, CBB2C, CBB3C) separate from the English SV/MEsystem

  • Print runs: smaller print runs than English or Japanese — which drives long-term scarcity and collector value

  • Authenticity markers: official Chinese cards have specific security features — holographic stamps, card stock, and set codes that distinguish them from fakes

What Are Pokémon Gem Packs?

The Gem Pack series is the crown jewel of the Chinese Pokémon TCG — and the product that most Western collectors don't know exists. Gem Packs are premium Chinese-exclusive booster boxes with a curated, rotating selection of reprinted cards from across the Pokémon TCG history, packaged in a format unique to the Chinese market.

Unlike standard booster packs which contain random cards from a single set, Gem Packs draw from a pool of high-value reprints across multiple eras — including fan-favourite cards from the Sword & Shield, XY Mega Evolution, and Scarlet & Violet periods. Each pack is designed to feel like a premium collector experience rather than a standard booster.

Why collectors are paying attention:

  • Exclusive to China: not available at any Western retailer without importing — this drives strong scarcity outside China

  • Reprinted chase cards: Gem Packs include reprints of cards with strong collector followings — Charizard variants, Eevee evolutions, Mewtwo

  • Premium packaging: the Gem Pack box itself is a collector item — oversized, high-quality presentation unlike standard Western product

  • Escalating value: Gem Pack Vol 1 is now significantly more expensive on the secondary market than its original retail price — early buyers of Vol 1 and Vol 2 have seen strong appreciation

Gem Pack Vol 1, Vol 2, and Vol 3: What's the Difference?

Gem Pack Vol 1 (CBB1C) — The Original

The first Gem Pack release, now considered the hardest to find in sealed condition. Vol 1 introduced the format and set the template for what followed — premium reprints of high-demand cards in a box format that Western collectors had never seen before. If you find a sealed Vol 1 box at close to retail price, that's a strong buy. Gem Pack Booster Box Vol 1 available at Celestrion → CHF 39.90.

Gem Pack Vol 2 (CBB2C) — The Fan Favourite

Widely considered the strongest pull-rate of the three volumes, Vol 2 expanded the reprint pool and included several Sword & Shield era chase cards that Western collectors actively seek out. The packaging design is also the most distinctive of the three — a deep navy and gold presentation. Gem Pack Booster Box Vol 2 available at Celestrion → CHF 49.90.

Gem Pack Vol 3 (CBB3C) — The Current Release

The most recent volume, currently in active release in China. Vol 3 features the largest reprint pool of the three, including Scarlet & Violet era cards and several exclusive Gem Pack variants that appear nowhere else in the TCG. The pull rate for high-value cards has been strong in early box breaks reported by collectors. Gem Pack Booster Box Vol 3 available at Celestrion → CHF 69.90.

Are Chinese Pokémon Cards Authentic? How to Tell

This is the most common question we get, and it's a legitimate concern — counterfeit Pokémon cards do exist in the market. Here's what you need to know:

  • Official Chinese cards have set codes: every legitimate Simplified Chinese release has a set code (CS0C, CBB2C, etc.) printed on the card and packaging. If a seller can't confirm the set code, that's a red flag.

  • Card stock and print quality: official Chinese cards match the print quality of Japanese and English cards — the same card stock weight, the same holographic treatments, the same ink quality.

  • We source directly: all Chinese products at Celestrion are sourced from official licensed distributors. We do not purchase from unverified third-party resellers.

  • Packaging is sealed: every Gem Pack box and Gift Box we ship is factory sealed. We never open and reseal product.

Why Buy Chinese Pokémon from a Swiss Shop?

The practical answer: logistics and trust. Buying directly from Chinese sellers via Taobao or AliExpress means navigating customs, uncertain shipping timelines (3-8 weeks), and no recourse if a product arrives damaged or is not as described. Buying from Celestrion means:

  • Swiss stock, Swiss shipping: products are already in Switzerland, shipped domestically or EU-standard shipping timelines

  • MSRP pricing: we sell at fair prices — no European importer markup on top of import markup on top of retail

  • Full authenticity guarantee: every product verified by us before it goes into inventory

  • Customer support: real people, Swiss-based, reachable if something goes wrong

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Chinese Pokémon cards in official tournaments?

In most regional and international tournaments, only cards in English and Japanese are accepted. Chinese-language cards are generally not tournament-legal in European or North American events. Chinese cards are primarily collected rather than played competitively in the Western market.

Do Chinese cards have the same card art as English/Japanese cards?

Some cards are direct reprints with identical artwork — just Chinese text instead of English or Japanese. Others are Chinese-exclusive prints with unique artwork or card treatments not available anywhere else. The Gem Pack series and exclusive Gift Boxes contain a mix of both.

What is 'Simplified Chinese' vs 'Traditional Chinese'?

Simplified Chinese is the writing system used in mainland China and Singapore — the standard for official Pokémon TCG products. Traditional Chinese is used in Taiwan and Hong Kong and uses different character forms. The Pokémon TCG products we carry are all Simplified Chinese (mainland China prints) unless otherwise specified.

Are new Chinese Pokémon sets coming?

Yes — the Chinese Pokémon TCG follows its own release calendar, roughly mirroring international releases with a delay of several months to a year. New sets and Gem Pack volumes are released regularly. We stock new Chinese products as they become available — follow our Chinese Pokémon category for the latest.

The Niche Moat: Why Chinese Pokémon Is Celestrion's Speciality

Most Swiss and European TCG shops stock English and Japanese Pokémon. Almost none stock Chinese. The sourcing is harder, the logistics are more complex, and the customer base is smaller — which is exactly why we've invested in it. For serious collectors who want something that the players at their local game store don't have, Chinese Pokémon is the purest expression of collector-grade rarity in the current market.
